The Omlet Blog Archives: August 2014

Omlet Newsletter – August 22nd 2014

When we spotted this picture in the latest Sugru newsletter, we just had to share it with you. One of their customers used her Sugru for something rather unusual…moulding a foot for the prosthetic leg on her pet chicken. She’s not the only creative one in her family, as it was her father that made the hen’s fibreglass prosthetic leg, following a fox attack. Snowy’s walking has improved since the new leg, and it gives us a warm glow to know that there are such caring chicken keepers out there.

There’s eggciting news from Omlet too. The Eglu, and other popular products, will soon be available in New Zealand! Appletons Animal Housing and Poultry Supplies will shortly be stocking a range of Omlet products, along with their own eggstensive selection of chicken keeping accessories. We can’t wait for our Eglus to be on the other side of the world, and we’ll keep you posted!

New Walk in Cat Enclosure

There’s no denying that we’re mad about chickens, but we are crazy about cats too. That’s why we have just introduced something new and exciting, just for our feline friends.. Introducing the Walk In Cat Enclosure – a safe and secure outdoor space for your precious pets. Give your cats the freedom to enjoy the great outdoors without the worry of them running away or getting in trouble.

The Walk in Cat Enclosure offers the purrfect combination of style and security. Unlike other runs, this will blend into the garden beautifully, while offering your pet a large space to play, rest and dream of mice. The generous height will allow you to walk in too and spend time with your cat.

In stock today from just £365.

Eggcellent Review of the Eglu Go

Looking for a chicken coop that’s built to last? The Eglu Go is the answer. Not only is it stylish, functional and easy to clean, but it will last you for years. Liza left us this five star review to prove the point:

“I have had my Eglu Go for 3.5 years and am really impressed with the quality. Mine has been out all year round in all weathers and this month we moved it. I was amazed at the lack of degeneration of the run (no rust whatsoever) and the Eglu hut itself shows no real signs of wear! I anticipated the little plastic clips snapping when i took the run apart but amazingly NONE of them broke so was able to put back together again with no problems. I look forward to my hens enjoying their Eglu hut & run for many more years!”

Hop to a Hen Party this Bank Holiday!

Looking for something to do this bank holiday weekend? Why not go to a hen party? No learner signs or tiaras required, we promise, and you won’t be forced to drink rub baby oil on any bodies. An Omlet hen party is much more civilised and suitable for all the family. Think tea, cake and learning about chickens, in the company of someone fantastically friendly and fanatical about feathers. (Not feather boas, might we add.) These courses run throughout the UK, by chicken eggsperts and they are the perfect opportunity to learn about keeping hens before you buy an Eglu. The Claws are out with the Pussycat Riot!

And now let’s put the spotlight back on cats, with a rather unusual new story. An internet privacy company has just launched a range of rather ‘cat’roversial products, dubbed The Pussycat Riot. They have created cat scratching posts modelled on North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un and Russian president Vladimir Putin. Encouraging moggies to maul models of political leaders in protest? There’s one word for that – MeOW!

There’s no denying, the details on these pet accessories is incredible, with 3d printed and hand-painted faces. That kind of detail comes at a price though, of £4,500 each, to be purrrcise! A cheaper option might be the litter trays, lined with portraits of Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Egypt’s Abdel Fattah El Sisi.

So, why have this company chosen cats to make their political point? Marketing director Cian McKenna-Charley said: “The internet loves cats, with millions of feline videos and images shared online every day all around the world, and even annual internet cat video festivals held to celebrate the best memes and virals…To us the cat is a symbol of freedom, and of a fair and neutral internet.”

Welcome Summer with a Walk in Chicken Run

Want to eggstend your chicken keeping area? It’s time to invest in a Walk in Chicken Run from Omlet. Available in various sizes, this flexible run system can be customised to suit your garden needs. Easy-to-add extensions allow you to build a run as large as you like, and you can choose to attach it to your Eglu to create the perfect poultry palace.

The Walk in Chicken Run is made from predator-resistant mesh, keeping your hens safe from foxes (and dogs). With a dark green coating it will look great in your garden, blending into the surroundings beautifully. A stable-style door allows you to move the top and bottom independently, to say hello to your hens or pop in a handful of corn without them escaping. You’ll particularly henjoy being able to walk in to the run without needing to bend down, due to its generous height. There is a lo-rise version available too, which tiny tots (as above) will have no problem walking in.

Order your Walk in Chicken Run today and give your hens a superb space this Summer!

Top Tips for Keeping Pets Safe this Summer

Chickens – In very high heat they might drink twice as much water as usual. Adding extra drinkers will provide more water and stop chickens from having to fight over who gets to drink first. They prefer cool water, so change it regularly, but don’t give it to them ice cold.

Rabbits & Guinea pigs – Flies can be a nasty parasite for rabbits. They lay their eggs which will hatch into larvae, and after a few days they will start to feed on your rabbit by burrowing in and eating it. Make sure that you check your rabbit for cleanliness in the summer heat. Guinea pigs do not appear to be troubled by flies in the same way that rabbits are, but it is still important to check them daily to make sure they have clean bottoms.

Hamsters & Gerbils – It may be a good idea to move your Qute so that it is in the shade as much as possible throughout the day. To keep your hamsters and gerbils cool, try putting a frozen bottle of water next to, or under, the cage, and make sure their own water bottle is topped up.

Cats – Cats like to find cosy spots in all sorts of places, but it’s important that they can find somewhere cool if they choose to. Before closing doors of greenhouses or other outdoor buildings, be scrupulous about checking that your pet isn’t hiding in there.

Dogs – Trimming your dog’s hair is a good idea to help it keep cool, but don’t be tempted to shave the hair completely. The layers of dogs’ coats actually protect them from overheating and sunburn. If using a sunscreen, make sure it is labelled for use on animals.

Bees – Bee and nectar flow starts to drop rapidly in August. You don’t need to worry about swarming but if you have a Beehaus, it’s time to add that Wasp Guard to help bees defend their hive from robbing.

Gingernut Rangers – the Friendliest Hens by Far!

If you’re thinking about starting to keep chickens this Summer you’ll know that there are lots of things to think about: how many chickens you want to keep, whether to choose a plastic or a wooden house, where to set up the chicken keeping area, and even what names to choose for the new pets. But another decision to make is what breed of chicken to choose. This might not be the first thing you think of, but chickens vary hugely, and choosing the right breed for you is really important.

If you order an Eglu from Omlet, you’ll have the option to buy hens too. We offer two types of hybrid chicken – Miss Pepperpot and the Gingernut Ranger. Both are good egg layers, docile and eggstremely friendly.

We recently delivered an Eglu Go UP, along with two hens, to the garden bloggers at Fennel and Fern. They have been impressed with the Eglu so far, but their latest blog post puts the chickens in the limelight. Summarising the characters of the four different breeds, F&F score Gingernuts top marks for the friendly factor. They say the Gingernut, Rosie, “is always the first to greet you whenever you appear at the gate, and never complains about being picked up. She likes being stroked by my infant nephew, and will follow you around, trying to find out what you’re up to.”

So, why not check out our range of Chicken Houses and pick up a few Gingernut Rangers while you’re at it!?

Tweet of the Month

“My gorgeous wife got me 6 chickens for my b-day. Big thank you @omlet for helping us get set up. Great company” (@mrjakedwood)

July’s Tweet of the Month came from none other than Eastenders actor Jake Wood, aka Max Branning. His wife treated him to an Eglu Cube and six chickens for his birthday, and it looks like it went down an absolute storm. Jake is clearly loving the new pets, and he must be eggcited about the eggs because he tweeted a picture of those too. We reckon he could become a real hentrepreneur should he ever retire from acting…and in the mean time, perhaps Albert Square will become a hen-keeping haven.
