Omlet 10th Anniversary!

Hello,Can you believe it’s been a decade since Omlet began? The Eglu Classic was launched back in 2004, by four friends who met while studying at the Royal College of Art. 10 years on and (between you and me) they may be looking a little older and more worn, but the Eglu remains as fresh and funky as ever. Since sparking a sensation in urban chicken keeping, Omlet have delivered Eglus to households across Europe and America, and introduced thousands of families to the joy of keeping hens and the taste of freshly laid eggs. We hope you’ve henjoyed the journey as much as we have, and we’d like to eggspress our thanks for being such a fantastic bunch!

With Easter just around the corner and with a 10 year anniversary to celebrate, we’re eggstraordinarily eggcited to be able to finally unveil some cracking new products that we’ve been keeping quiet about. Plus, find out about the competition that will have you mistaking us for Willy Wonka… (There’s also a little secret eggstra hidden at the end of this email. Shhhh.)

Yellow Eglu Classics Back in Business!

What do Eglus, custard and daffodils have in common? They’re all yellow! That’s right, the yellow Eglu Classic is back with a bang, and looking better than ever before. It’s been a long time since we saw our old friend, and we’ve missed the bright and sunny shade of chicken coop, so, what better way to celebrate Omlet’s 10 year anniversary than by bringing back this cracking colour, and reuniting the original Eglu traffic light trio!? At long last the Green, Red and Yellow Eglus can nest in harmony and house lots of happy chickens.

Spring is the perfect time to start keeping chickens, and there’s nothing more Spring-like than a bloomin’ beautiful yellow Eglu. You’ll be collecting fresh eggs in time for Easter (and that beats chocolate for sure). Order yours today and you could start your dream of keeping hens with just the cluck of a button!

Brand New Eglu Egg Cup Now Available to Pre-Order

To celebrate 10 years of the Eglu Classic, we are eggstatic to unveil a new coop. It may be smaller than our other chicken houses, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in absolute all-round awesomeness. Introducing the Eglu Egg Cup – a miniature replica of the original Eglu Classic, for your boiled egg!

It’s cute, it’s cool, it’s iconic: the 2014 must-have breakfast eggcessory to add to your collection. (Please note, Omlet can not be held liable for any crockery kerfuffle caused by egg cup envy.) An 1/8th scale replica of the Eglu Classic, this may be too small to keep real chickens, but it is the perfect size to nest a beautiful boiled egg. Available as an Egg Cup, or as a Breakfast Set complete with toast rack run and salt and Miss Pepperpots, this is undoubtedly the only egg coop of its kind, and with five colours, you can choose one to match your real Eglu.

The Eglu has been eggsibited all over the world and now you can display a little piece of design history right in your kitchen. Perfect for enjoying the simple pleasure of eating a boiled egg in style!

Pre-Order your Eglu Egg Cup for £9.99 or your Eglu Egg Cup Breakfast Set for £19.99!

High-Vis Chicken Jackets on the Discovery Channel

Want to know the history behind Omlet’s high-vis chicken jackets? Watch the Discovery Channel’s fantastic Daily Planet report. They recently did a story on the craze of the chicken jacket, travelling all the way from Canada just to get a slice of the action. Those Canadians may have thought that the UK had gone a little bit bonkers, but the team quickly realised how popular, and practical, the must-have poultry product is, especially when seeing it in use.

Catch up on the 4 minute clip on our Youtube Channel. You’ll meet the designer behind the product, be let behind the scenes at Omlet HQ, and even see the initial drawings of our best-selling hen garment. Perhaps the best bit of the video, however, is back in the studio, when the presenters attempt to catch their model chickens on the catwalk.

The Fuss-Free Way to Fresh Bread

Do you love baking bread but hate the mess it makes? Weigh in one bowl, mix in another, prove in a third and then bake in a tin – you end up with a lot of washing up to do. Sound familiar? Then what you ‘knead’ is the Lékué Bread Maker. The silicone answer to fuss-free baking. This nifty gadget allows you to weigh, mix, prove and bake in one. When open, it acts like a regular bowl, perfect for preparing your dough, and when fastened, it turns into the perfect cooking companion. Its design as a partially closed bowl allows steam to circulate inside, making the dough moist and preventing the bread from drying up, and the side openings allow hot air circulation, giving bread a crusty and golden texture. Although you’ll only have one bowl to wash up afterwards, if you still don’t fancy the idea of donning the rubber gloves, just pop it in the dishwasher.

This is just one of the new Lékué products now in stock. Buy today for £25, or click here to browse the range.

‘Tis the Season to be Incubating!

We won’t bore you with the tra-la-la-la-la’s, but if you’ve hatched a plan for chicks, now is the perfect time to start. As long as your chickens are laying, you can hatch and incubate chicks all year round, but the most popular time to breed your own chickens is February to May. Your flock of chickens will be strong and healthiest during the Spring, so you will get the best eggs for the job. And, if you start now, you could have a batch of gorgeous little chicks in time for Easter. That’s far better than chocolate eggs, don’t you think!?

Omlet customer Edward recently uploaded the above photos, showing his own hatching success. He used Brinsea products for the incubation and rearing of his chicks, and they worked marvellously. You can find Brinsea incubators, brooders and other eggstras such as candling lamps on our website, and there’s some brilliant information to help you get started too. For a great guide to hatching, by incubation eggspert Lewis, click here, or read the Omlet beginner’s guide to incubation here.

Good cluck!

Facebook Post of the Week

This week’s favourite Facebook Post came from Jill Bennett:

“Spent all afternoon building their new home! Happy little piggies love it!!”

We think Sally and Nibbles look right at home in their new Eglu Go Hutch. They can go in and out of their house as they please, snack on some fresh grass whenever they choose and curl up in their lovely snug bedding area. Plus, who needs a garden full of daffodils when you could have a bright yellow Eglu to admire!?

If you’re looking for a fresh alternative to a traditional guinea pig hutch, take a peek at the Eglu Go Hutch. Just make sure you put your sunglasses on first!

Chocolate Treats for Everyone

Chocolate Hens – If you thought that the gift of three french hens was only suitable for Christmas, think again. This set of three chocolate chickens are the perfect gift for Easter…or any other time of the year. Ok, they may not be hentirely french (they were actually made at a chocolatier in Wales), but we assure you they are completely scrumptious! So tasty, in fact, that you may not want to give them away to your true love after all!

An eggcellent Easter gift for £3.50

Chocolate Fried Eggs – Chocolate for breakfast? Yes please! These chocolate fried eggs will go down a treat with a morning cup of tea, but perhaps it’s best to avoid the bacon and ketchup. If you prefer your sugar rush later on in the day, that’s quite all-white too; our sources tell us that these taste eggseptional at any time.

Eggseptionally tasty at £3.50

Chocolate Bunny & Carrots – Are you looking for an Easter gift for someone that’s hopping mad about rabbits? You carrot get better than this! A great alternative to an Easter Egg, this set of bunny and carrot chocolates is cute, fun and incredibly tasty. The chocolate carrots may not help you see in the dark, but they beat the veggie version in the yum factor every time!

A tasty treat for £3.50

Happy shopping!

Omlet Newsletter March 4th 2014

Hello,

It’s Pancake Day again already and we hope you’re already on your second stack of these tremendously traditional treats and enjoying every mouthful. If you haven’t made your batter yet, or if you’d totally forgotten what day it is, don’t panic – we come bearing the recipe for perfect pancakes. There are some ideas for weird and wonderful toppings to try too.

Like to keep yours simple? You’re not alone, we love nothing more than a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of sugar on ours. It’s a good job we’ve got something sensationally stylish to store our citrus on at Omlet HQ then, isn’t it!? Is it an Egg Ramp? Is it a fruit bowl? You’ll just have to wait and see…

Record Breaking Pancakes

Largest Pancake – In 1994, the Co-Operative Union cooked a 15m pancake in Rochdale. The pancake measured 1 inch thick, weighed 3 tonnes and took some serious machinery to flip over.

Highest Pancake Toss – The highest pancake flip measured a whopping 9.47m. It was accomplished by pancake pro Dominic Cuzzacrea, in New York, 2010.

Most Expensive Pancake – The Manchester Radisson Blu Edwardian’s Opus restaurant will be serving a painfully expensive pancake dish today. At £800 a serving, it contains lobster, caviar, truffles, mussels, langoustines and a dollop of Dom Pérignon Rosé hollandaise sauce.

Recipe for Perfect Pancakes

Ingredients:
110g/4oz plain flour, sifted
pinch of salt
2 eggs
200ml/7fl oz milk mixed with 75ml/3fl oz water
50g/2oz butter

Method:

  1. Sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl. Make a well in the centre of the flour and break the eggs into it, then begin whisking the eggs, incorporating any bits of flour from around the edge of the bowl as you do so.
  2. Gradually add small quantities of the milk and water mixture, still whisking. When all the liquid has been added, give it another whisk until the batter is smooth, with the consistency of thin cream. Melt the butter in a pan. Spoon 2 tbsp of it into the batter and whisk it in, then pour the rest into a bowl and use it to lubricate the pan, using a kitchen paper to smear it round before you make each pancake.
  3. Get a frying pan really hot, then turn the heat down to medium and do a test pancake to see if you’re using the correct amount of batter. 2 tbsp is about right for an 18cm/7in pan. It’s also helpful if you spoon the batter into a ladle so it can be poured into the hot pan in one go. As soon as the batter hits the hot pan, tip it around from side to side to get the base evenly coated with batter. It should take only half a minute or so to cook; you can lift the edge with a palette knife to see if it’s tinged gold as it should be. Flip the pancake over, cook for a few seconds, and slide it out of the pan onto a plate.
  4. Stack the pancakes as you make them between sheets of greaseproof paper on a plate fitted over simmering water, to keep them warm while you make the rest.
  5. Serve with your choice of topping.

Weird and Wonderful Toppings

Peanut Butter and Jam – An American classic, and the perfect combo for a pancake filling.

Melted After Eights – Complete heaven, according to one our Twitter followers.

Banana and Bacon – With a touch of maple syrup too. A surprisingly popular choice of topping.

Green Eggs and Ham – Very odd. Very Dr. Seuss. Kids will love it. Colour and fry the white separately from the yolk to achieve the look.

Hot Dogs – This makes sense. Hot sausages on pancakes, with a dollop of ketchup, mustard or apple sauce, and rolled up.
